LIfe During Wartime 15 Year Anniversary!

Rebecca Gilbert and I started Life During Wartime in 1995... and now it's hosted by Kevin, Kate, Cissie, Colin, and still me! We are celebrating 15 years of our punk rock radio show on KBOO with a live concert at Black Water Records, 1920 SE Morrison St on Thursday August 5th.  Performing will be hardcore heroes Lebenden Toten, the noisy assault of Walls and the return of Social Graces.  The show will start at 7PM sharp and has a $5 cover.  All ages are welcomed to this event, which is a benefit for KBOO.

Roosevelt Oral History Project on the air This Wednesday!

As you may remember, KBOO was awarded funding from the Regional Arts & Culture Council for a collaborative project with Roosevelt High School.  Six students are participating in the project.

Brooke Palmer, Ryan White, and I have been working weekly with the kids who are participating in the Roosevelt Rough Riders Oral History Project. We are so excited, and a bit nervous to be going on the air this Wednesday! Solomon will act as the host for the show. We will play the interviews that were conducted by Briana, Erin, Willie and Dorian, with interesting residents of Portland. Tyrin will do technical support work.

KBOO gets a RACC Opportunity Grant!

KBOO found out this week that it will be awarded funding from the Regional Arts & Culture Council for a collaborative project with Roosevelt High School.  Students are being taught how to conduct interviews, edit audio and create great radio.

This is a special opportunity for KBOO.   Former evening news volunteer, Ryan White and Youth Advocate, Erin Yanke will be working with Brooke Palmer, a Literary Specialist at Roosevelt teaching students the elements of story telling with sound.  We are thrilled to be able to accept the invitation from Roosevelt, which will result in a rich and powerful experience for the youth involved.

The students will be featured on KBOO radio on two separate occasions.  First they will be guests on April 28th edition of The Underground, the monthly program hosted by the KBOO Youth Collective. The Roosevelt students will be interviewed about their projects and will play samples from their 'work in progress.'  A few weeks later, on May 19th, the students will have their own hour-long program dedicated to sharing their project with the wider community.

Young Women’s Equity Project at KBOO

The Portland Tribune has posted an article on the Young Women's Equity Project that we have been working with:

It can be pretty daunting for a teenage refugee girl from a different country to talk with a stranger on the street.

But it has become second nature to five girls working with the Immigration and Refugee Community Organization and KBOO (90.7 FM) radio during the past six months.

As part of IRCO’s Young Women’s Equity Project, the five girls have learned the ins and outs of the radio business – story development, interviewing, writing, producing, editing and completing programs on various topics. While IRCO helps thousands of people each year simply acclimate to life in the United States, the girls want not only to survive, but also to thrive through college years and adulthood.
