West Coast Premiere of Orphee, an Opera by Philip Glass
Portland was honored with the privilege of hosting the West Coast premiere of Orphee, a relatively new opera composed by Philip Glass. Orphee is a 2 Act story of mysterious death in juxtaposition of two worlds --– driven by a score from Philip Glass. The music itself worthy of a concert, beautifully composed, demonstrating the characteristic hypnotism of polyrhythm mixed in a rich palette, patterned by blocks and cycles; the kind of stuff that Glass is venerated for. And the Portland Opera Orchestra performs the score by Glass beautifully.
In a modern setting, the story of a famous poet, Orphee and his jealousy of an 18 year old up and coming poet, Cegeste, who is admired and supported by the princess which stirs an obsession from Orphee. As the story unfolds the princess seems to communicate with another world – a world of the dead. Orphee witnesses a resurrection, putting him in an uncomfortable place, and a seemingly uninvolved chauffeur of the princess gives Orphee some radio that transmits poetic statements, one after the next. Orphee obsessively transcribes the phrases, one after the other, neglecting his newly pregnant wife. In his neglect, Orphee loses her to the princess and the other world, and again, the seemingly uninvolved chauffer turns over the mirror of the other world, where Orphee goes to retrieve his wife. And the plot thickens. The stage is determined by a mirror pattern; the story is told in 2 settings, 2 acts, and 2 worlds. One begins to realize there is a duality in all things and what makes this opera compelling is that it calls out this human struggle, in the mirror of juxtaposition. Like many 2 act plays, the ending is not so much a resolution, but a mystery folded on to itself.
Portland Opera is performing Orphee November 12th and 14th at Keller Auditorium. The performances are being recorded for an upcoming release, so look for that. Reporting the arts for K-B-O-O, this is Sean Ongley.

Bruce W. Hodges on KBOO
We at the Kill Ugly Radio Heavy Industries Trust© were both pleased and honored to have on as our special guest Portland artist Bruce W. Hodges.
Mr. Hodges has been making unique sounds with his electrified Jew's harp under the moniker The EJH for years and he came down to the KBOO air room for a live set of his mind-bending music.
From the liner notes of Bruce's CD:
"It has been found in a few genres. Blues, country-western, folk and others. Well, over the decades with nothing else better to do I would twang walk everywhere I went. My first decade I always had one in my pocket a Snoopy or an American folk Harp. Today it’s a cole black and I stopped carrying them around about 20 years ago. I always wondered what it would sound like if it was played through guitar effects. I never knew for at least another decade. Then I would occasionally bump into a mic and some kind of effect usually a reverb or a simple delay, phase or flange. This scenario was usually some person I’ve met who was in a band and would show me his guitar and stuff..."
Bruce deftly played multiple harps while switching through various effects to make an audio sculpture that swirled around the stereo spectrum.
He also chatted with us briefly about his unusual technique, his harps and effects.
You can visit Bruce and his music at his MySpace page here.

A free-flowing psychotronic mix of UFO themes and spacey sounds.
Last night I substituted on KBOO and devoted an entire show to UFO's. I'm in this weird position of being fascinated by the UFO phenomenom up to a point - especially the earliest reports from the late-forties and up to the late seventies - while also being a complete UFO skeptic. I don't believe that creatures from another planet are visiting earth, for a lot of scientific, logistical reasons.
Oh, I know! They have a greater understanding of science, therefor they can break all of the rules of what we think we know. And they evolved on a planet light years from Earth, yet appear to be humanoid, which most biologist tell us would be like two snowflakes looking exactly alike. Could happen, who knows?
Also, why would they visit in secret, then leave copious amounts of evidence and leave their terrestrial PR to some of Earth's oddest misfits?
But I do love documentaries made between the 50's and the 70's. I can't watch enough of them. It seems like after that, the UFO mythos takes on a quasi-religious/apocalyptic aspect that makes me even more skeptical, whereas before, the reports of sightings and encounters seem somewhat plausible and the reportees seem a little more valid and not cultish goofballs or people looking to make a name for themselves by becoming an expert in a field no legitimate scientist or investigator would care to go. I don't know. But the subject fascinates me from time to time. Add to that the fact that there's been a few sightings in our area of weird lights in the sky last month and at least one report of triangular light formations flying overhead.
Also, I love UFO documentaries. Especially ones made before the 80's. I'm not sure why. UFO abductions and Roswell get scant mention in older documentaries. It's worth noting. The Roswell case didn't pick up steam again until the 80's and 90's, when countless authors and more 'witnesses' than you could shake a stick at came out of the woodwork to resurrect the formerly dismissed story.

Dear Listeners of All Genders,
Ah yes, today, March 8, is International Women's Day. I'm a broad. I've lived abroad. I qualify.
Man, do I have a good show for you this morning!
Starting with these amazing voices: In Mulieribus. Their name is Latin. It means "Amongst Women." What better way to begin this day than with them performing a piece by perhaps one of the earliest female composers the world has known: the beloved Hildegard von Bingen (12th century). See the lyrics in Latin (and translated into English) below. Indeed, Mary, the ultimate woman, proceded from the finger of God... In Mulieribus is a Portland-based group of seven women who perform beautiful pieces of days of yore--WAY yore--we're talking the 11th through 15th centuries here. Anna Song is their director. Isn't her name wonderful?
I have thrown in music from just down the street (Haris Blackwood and Joni Laurence) and from just down the continental plate (an extraordinary female Tuvan throat singer by the name of Sainkho). Squeezed in some Greek and German and Gregorian Chant into the mix. If this isn't music to celebrate all that is beautiful, strong, resilient, prayerful, joyful, loving, and caressing, I don't know what is. There's a set dedicated to motherhood and one dedicated to saying ciao to a ill-fitting man, one that lifts up women of color, one that explores the voices from women around this world.
And, of course, I have to play at least one song of defiance. And what could be stronger and more assertive than the lyrics telling that gumshoe to take a major hike than Sarah Vaughn's stellar classic, Peter Gunn? See those lyrics below and rejoice if you're shaking dirt from your sandals... Sing and shout along!
Oh my. Would that I could have twenty-four hours of International Women's Day all to myself. I could fill it with strains, sounds, and voices of the most precious...
Men: you are not forgotten.
Warmly,
Diane Hunt
Cum processit factura
Cum processit factura digiti Dei,
formata ad imaginem Dei,
in ortu mixti sanguinis
per peregrinationem casus Ade,
elementa susceperunt gaudia in te,
o laudabilis Maria,
Celo rutilante
et in laudibus sonante.
English translation of Cum processit factura:
Proceeding from the finger of God,
made in the image of God,
this creation was held
within a womb of mixed blood
because of Adam's exiled wanderings,
yet the elements responded with joy for you,
O praiseworthy Mary,
as the heavens shimmered
and sounded praise to you.
Lyrics to Peter Gunn :
Every night your line is busy,
All that buzzin' makes me dizzy.
Couldn't count on all my fingers
All the dates you had with swingers.
Bye-bye.
Bye, baby.
I'm gonna kiss you goodbye
And walk right through that doorway.
So long.
I'm leaving.
This is the last time we'll meet
On the street going your way.
Don't look surprised.
You know you've buttered your bread.
So now it's fair
You should stare
At the back of my head.
If you write a letter to me my former friend, don't you end with an R.S.V.P
I'm going bye, bye, I'm moving,
Tomorrow I may be splittin' to Britain or Norway
I'm saying bye, bye, bye baby
Now that I heard all that jazzin' whereas I have had it, I've had it
I'm through now with you now
So baby it's au revoir, adios, ciao-ciao, goodbye.

Dear Listeners,
Happy New Year! Thanks for allowing me in to wake you from your slumber this morning and ease you into the new day and the new year with some fun (and, in cases, improbable) music. I had a blast putting this show together and would love to hear that you enjoyed it!
Here are some of the lyrics from the third track I played this morning, Moscow-born Regina Spektor's "On the Radio." Thoughts to take you into 2010...
"...This is how it works...you're young until you're not...You love until you don't...You try until you can't...You laugh until you cry...You cry until you laugh...And everyone must breathe...Until their dying breath...No this is how it works...You peer inside yourself...You take the things you like...Then try to love the things you took...And then you take that love you made...And stick it into someone else's heart...Pumping someone else's blood...And walking arm in arm...You hope it don't get harmed...But even if it does...You'll just do it all again...And on the radio...You'll hear November Rain...That solo's awful long...But it's a nice refrain...You listen to it twice...'Cause the DJ is asleep..."
Keep your circle of friends close in 2010...keep music spinning on your CD player...keep dancing and singing...keep open to new things in this new year...fall in love!
Warmly,
Diane Hunt
