Out Loud

Out Loud is KBOO's queer culture show, celebrating & serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning & allied communities. We feature local musical talent, interviews with local and national community groups, authors, and really anyone from the queer community. We strive to give voice to those not heard in the main stream media.

There are two shows that rotate weeks with Out Loud - both celebrate & serve the LGBTQ community.  Gender Blender and The Other Team are under a year old and still evolving.  All three shows are an hour long - airing from 6 to 7 pm every Tuesday evening. The Other Team airs the first Tuesday, Out Loud airs the second and fourth weeks, and Gender Blender airs the third Tues.

This week celebrates the Second Annual Transgender Week of Celebration by the City of Portland and Multnomah County!

On tonight's show, we highlight two local events in the rainbow community that welcome everyone!

Joe LeBlanc and Stephen Cassell talk about QPatrol. The QPatrol is on the streets of Portland to prevent violence against our community. This patrol is a result of community involvement and brainstorming after recent gay bashings. It's important to report all hate crimes so law enforcement knows what's really going on. You can report a hate crime anytime online at  www.doj.state.or.us/hate_crime_report.shtml

Music break from The Cliks "I'm Not Your Boy". The Cliks are playing an all-ages show at Peter's Room at The Roseland on August 18th.

Next, we heard from Jessamyn Rae and Christy Sowers about the upcoming Gender Free for All Trans Week of Celebration Rally happening Saturday Aug 7th from 4 to 7pm @ Unthank Park in Portland.

Tune in to Out Loud next week to hear about how gender and sexual orientation are connected to human trafficing and sex crimes.

Country Music Star Chely Wright's Coming Out Interview

program:
Out Loud
program date:
Tue, 05/11/2010

Last week country music star Chely Wright shocked the industry by coming out as a lesbian. Wright is best known for her song, “Single White Female” and being on People’s 50 Most Beautiful People list.  Few had guessed that Wright was hiding a secret lesbian relationship or that country music homophobia nearly drove her to suicide.  Now Wright has released a revealing biography, Like Me, and a new album, Lifted Off the Ground.

One of the first media outlets Chely Wright revealed her secret to was the lesbian magazine Curve. On April 15th, Chely Wright spoke with Curve editor-chief Diane Anderson-Minshall. The interview will be Curve’s June cover story, which comes out May 28th.  But tonight, in a special collaboration between Curve and KBOO, we’re very fortunate to bring you an exclusive preview, with excerpts from the Curve interview interspersed with Wright‘s own music (including Single White Female, Shut Up and Drive, Shadows of Doubt, Broken, and Notes to the Coroner).

Carla also reported on a disturbing story about an elderly gay couple Harold & Clay who were separated and discriminated against by Sonoma County California.  In addition, we heard Chris Pureka's Porch Songs from the album Driving North)
