Former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart on his new Smithsonian Collection of the world's music
Most of you are familiar with Mickey Hart for his decades of work as one of The Grateful Dead's drummers.
But did you know about his work with the Smithsonian Institution, specifically with their Smithsonian Folkways music label?
Well earlier this week, the Smithsonian released the Mickey Hart Collection featuring 25 albums drawn from ‘The World,’ a series Hart curated that incorporated his solo projects, other artists’ productions, and re-releases of out-of-print titles. Six of the twenty-five albums form the “Endangered Music Project,” a collaboration between Mickey Hart and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, which presents recordings from musical traditions at risk.
And on this week's installment of Grateful Dead & Friends, Mickey joined us live to talk about the Collection, his new band, tour and forthcoming album.
You can freely download 10 files and stream 25 others from the Collection and watch a behind-the-scenes tour of Smithsonian Folkways with Mickey.

Well, here we are doing our first show (for Begonia Studios Presents) of 2012. This was a 50 / 50 show comprised of an overview of the 1985 Philladelphia Pa. Spectrum Shows, and a first set from The Great American Music Hall In San Francisco 08-13-75.
The 85 Spectrum overview is the Good Ol' Rootin' Tootin' Grateful Dead. I know that things wern't fabulous for certain Band Members at that time, but everybody seemed like they were haveing a really good time during these shows, as well as the next weekend at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater (I was there for those Irvine shows). Not "sterling performances", but Fun!
The Great American Music Hall 08-13-75 show is one of the classic concerts of the Dead's long career. A party thrown for a very small audience, Grateful Dead play a sparkling concert that has very much stood the test of time. 16 years later, Grateful Dead saw fit to release this show as it's first in the "From The Vault" series. One From The Vault is worthy of being in any Dead Head's music collection. Find a copy, buy it, and you will love it forever! Check www.Dead.Net

about that JGB jam you just played
That you didn't seem to know anything about, except that it was just a 'jam' (?). I recognized the tune they were jamming on, it was 'Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder', the Nicky Hopkins instrumental jam tune, originally recorded when he was with Quicksilver Messenger Service. Later on (I think), members of the Rolling Stones (with Nicky Hopkins) put out an album called 'Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder', which I assume had that song on it (the cover was pretty strange, I remember that much).
Anyway, thanks for playing that, it inspired me to pull the original out of my 'recorded to mp3' albums and give it a whirl. This 'Help On the Way/Slipknot!/Franklin's Tower' is pretty awesome, too. Keep up the good work!

I love dead
I always listen to your dead program on sat!
Great!

Solo Jerry At Passaic, NJ
Hey there Sun Lee/ GD&F DJ's...
First, thanks for volunteering. KBOO is the best, thanks to all you wonderful volunteers.
Second, I wanted to make a new comment, this somehow seems to be a reply. Whoops! My skills at these things are pretty slim, my apologies....
Third and main point: I LOVED the (solo acoustic) Jerry set last week, but when I clicked on the link in the PLAYLISTS tab, it played another (GD electric) set. Did I do something wrong? Or perhaps the link is wrong?
I'd love to have access to the Jerry set. Please advise!
Thanks & happy new year to all....
Play more GRATEFUL DEAD dammit!
Hey Sun,
How many GD songs did you play today performed by the Grateful Dead? I counted four (five if you include Hey Jude.). Play more GD man, it's called the "Grateful Dead and Friends" not "Bands who wish they were the Grateful Dead."
I like the show and I like KBOO but I (and most of my friends who also listen) want to hear the GRATEFUL DEAD, not Furthur, not Widespread Panic, or some local jam band. GRATEFUL DEAD, more please. We don't want to hear other bands playing Grateful Dead songs (Widespread Panic) but the actual GD playing GD music.
Thanks.
Rodrigo
GD marathon
I'd like to request some shows for the GD marathon this weekend. I'd love to hear 12-31-83 Civic Aud and/or 8-28-82 Veneta OCF grounds. Do you have the SBD's from the Further shows from Oakland w/ John Kadlecik. -thanks, Jakester, Vancouver, WA

Duane, sorry I missed your email/show. Perhaps we can schedule another time to do it. Life has been way hectic, but will slow down soon :o)

The Grateful Dead
Hey, Duane!
Caught your show today for the first time since moving back to the NW after a 33 year exile in Wyoming. In early 1969 (40 years ago!), I was a senior at Columbia River High in Vancouver-new the year before from Connecticut-and not allowed to driver over to Portland after dark. My girlfriend really wanted to go to a concert at this place I'd never heard of to see two bands I'd never heard of. Her Mom consented to drive she, I and her younger sister over and pick us up afterward. Great concert, great bands, great venue-though as a suburban teen, I was a bit shocked by the older hippies and some of their behavior. We, as minors, got kicked out about 10 or 10:30, but it was a memorable evening. The Grateful Dead and the Quicksilver Messenger Service at The Crystal Ballroom!
Enjoyed your show, and will catch it again. Thanks, Beau in Vancouver
Matt's Birthday today!!!!!!!!!
When I spoke with you I did not know it was your special LIFE Day!!!! Wish you peace, joy and good vibes for your DAY and beyond!! Namaste' Sheri Hoffman (your pesky cd addict). A very Happy BirthDAY and many more to come!!
