Well Arts Institute's "Fierce Love" & the return of Shen Yun Performing Arts
Dmae Roberts features the healing spirit of performance with two very different groups. First up, we find out about Well Arts Institute's new show Fierce Love about parents writing about their kids with cerebral palsy. Then we find out about Shen Yun Performing Arts, a group celebrating Chinese arts despite persecution. Our guests include co-directors Erica Terpening-Romeo, Heath Hyun Houghton and writer Susan Cushman of Well Arts. In the second half, we talk with Xiaoyang Wang of Oregon Falun Dafa Association sponsoring the return to Portland of Shen Yun and it's spectacle of 100 acrobats, dancers and musicians.
More about Fierce Love:

And in the latter part of the show we talk with Xiaoyang Wang of the Oregon Falun Dafa Associationa volunteer based non-profit organization dedicated to sharing traditional Chinese culture with local communities. The group is presenting Shen Yun Performing Arts in Oregon. The name of the group literally translates in Chinese to "the beautify of the divine beings dancing."

Shen Yun has been in conflict with the Chinese  Community Party  because it's associated with the Falun Dafa or Falun Gong, a meditative religious group in China which has had a history being persecuted by the government. Regardless of its political history, the Shen Yun shows are all about celebratring art, culture and history of China's past.

More about Shen Yun:

Shen Yun Performing Arts is a non-profit organization, and dance and music company based in New York. Its mission is to revive authentic Chinese culture which has been mostly destroyed over past 60 year under communist rule. The company has four troupes that tours the world each season simultaneously from Dec through May with all new programs.

Shen Yun captures the spirit of a culture long lost. The show moves quickly through regions, dynasties, and legends. Tremendous athleticism, thunderous battle drums, and masterful vocalists are all set to animated backdrops that transport the audience to another world and another time in Chinese history.

The NYC-based group brings to life 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through classical Chinese dance and music in a large spectacle production that has gained a strong international following. The show features nearly 100 artists, 400 costumes, and the only orchestra in the world featuring both classical Western and Chinese instruments.
