Position Summary

The KBOO Station Manager is responsible for providing strategic leadership to the organization by working with the board of directors to establish goals, strategies, plans and policies. Key functional leadership responsibilities include human resources management, revenue development, financial viability and operational capability while ensuring that KBOO’s mission continues to be fulfilled.

Essential Functions

Staff Management & Union Labor Relations

  1. Establish employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of KBOO.

  2. Plan, assign and coordinate staff workflows, schedules and projects for the effective operation of the radio station.

  3. Coach, mentor and develop staff to progress in their work and career goals; provide routine performance appraisals.

  4. Recruit, interview, hire, on-board and train staff.

  5. Effectively manage staff interactions and performance in a unionized environment.

    1. Know and follow the collectively bargained agreement and participate in its development.

    2. Initiate appropriate and timely union progressive discipline as necessary.

    3. Provide thorough and timely documentation according to KBOO policy and Union CBA.

       6. Maintain a respectful work environment by supporting the KBOO House Rules.

Station Operations

  1. Manage KBOO Foundation budget, control expenses effectively, and practice fiscal responsibility; develop budget proposals for Board evaluation and approval.

  2. Drive revenue generation in collaboration with the Revenue Team through the membership program, grants and other means.

  3. Establish a timeline/plan with sufficient resources for budgeted revenue. Validate that KBOO remains in compliance with requirements of all funding entities.

  4. Ensure there is a plan and process for equipment and facility maintenance and replacement.

  5. Provide support for the volunteer program, ensuring that consistent recruiting and maintenance of the program is serving all volunteer needs for the organization.

  6. Facilitate the plan and resources for maintaining website, social media and IT infrastructure.

  7. Ensure that Membership has a plan and resources for all membership functions, and is able to support current members as well as bring in new members.

  8. With Board and staff, work to promote an environment at KBOO that is welcoming and supportive to all people,

  9. Evaluate KBOO programming to confirm that it meets the charter, mission, vision and values of KBOO.

  10. Build and maintain positive, collaborative relationships for KBOO with like-minded individuals, organizations and local businesses.

  11. Ensure KBOO follows all local, state and federal human resources laws, remains compliant with FCC requirements.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Minimum three or more years’ demonstrated successful experience as a strong leader in all areas of people management that include coaching, mentoring, evaluating, rewarding, as well as performance appraisals, employee relations and progressive discipline.

  • Experience managing staff in a union organized environment is strongly preferred.

  • Broadcasting industry experience desirable.

  • Non-profit management and development experience is preferred.

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree is a plus.

  • Knowledge of human resources best practices and procedures

  • Ability to address complaints and resolve problems.

  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people in a diverse workplace.

  • Ability to plan, delegate and organize people to meet organizational goals and objectives; project management skills.

  • Ability to manage within a budget, and approve expenses accordingly

  • Ability to be available on-call occasionally for emergencies.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of nonprofit budgeting and financial management as they relate to program and organization-wide management is preferred

  • Awareness of local, state and federal nonprofit, human resources, and other relevant laws, as well as the ability to ensure that KBOO operates within these laws is preferred.

Working Conditions

KBOO has a small staff and a large volunteer contingency. KBOO has regular membership drives that require extra time and coordination. The atmosphere is busy and stimulating. The ability to work in this kind of environment is essential.

Equipment Used and Physical Working Conditions

Computer, voicemail, copier, fax. Applicant must be able to remain in a stationary position approximately 50% of the time. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Applicant must be able to operate a computer and other office-productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The positions at this level are normally responsible for the overall management of the organization, including providing direction to Supervisors regarding the supervision of their staff. Final managerial authority and responsibility rests at this level. Direct reports to this position are the AM & PM News & Public Affairs Directors, Program Director, Development Director, Membership Director, Volunteer Coordinator, Web/New Media Coordinator, Finance Coordinator, Underwriting Coordinator, Engineer and Administrative Assistant.

Supervision Received

Works under the direction of the Board of Directors.
