James Dixon features PassinArt: A Theatre Company presents the Gospel of Lovingkindness and later Jane Vogel with Age and Gender Equity in the Arts talks to us about the upcoming Unconscious Bias: Achieving Gender Equity Symposium 2017. Gospel of Lovingkindness runs March 10-April 9, 2017 at the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center. We will meet with director Jerry Foster and the cast to hear more about PassinArt: A Theater Company's mission statement, the production, and the associated art exhibit hosted with this production. Unconscious Bias: Achieving Gender Equity Symposium 2017 is a two-day event, presented in partnership with Portland State University and its Office of Global Diversity and Inclusion on the PSU Campus, to explore how unconscious bias influences our behavior, and impacts our lives and the art we create and the focus is on gender bias with intersectionality of age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender variance/nonconformity, and disabilities.

(Airs 11am Tues 2/28/17 on KBOO 90.7FM or always on stagenstudio.com and always on iTunes)

PassinArt: A Theatre Company presents the Gospel of Lovingkindness by award-winning poet and playwright, Marcus Gardley, that was inspired by the death of 15-year old Hadiya Pendleton, who was shot in her Chicago neighborhood after performing with her high school drill team at the Presidential Inauguration in 2013. Gardley has transformed this tragedy into a powerful and poetic story of a teenage boy whose promising future is snuffed out by another young man.  The play is hard-hitting but also offers hope ad redemption for its characters and audiences. The show runs March 10-April 9, 2017 (Fridays/Saturdays-7:30 pm; and Sundays-3 pm) at the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center (5340 North Interstate Avenue). Post show discussions on March 19, 26 and April 9th.  Tickets $15-$25, group discount tickets available. This production features local artists La’Tevin Alexander, Shani Harris-Bagwell, Kenneth Dembo, Eric Island, Shelley B. Shelley and Tamara Monique Walker.

PassinArt will is also present the nationally recognized art exhibit, Kin Killin Kin, by James Pate, February 23-April 2, 2017 at the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center (5340 North Interstate Avenue in Portland) Wednesday-Sundays (Wed-Fridays-3-7 pm and Saturday/Sunday-1-5 pm). This visually powerful and thought provoking exhibition focuses on youth and gun violence. This exhibit has toured around the U.S. and important conversations have taken place to find positive alternatives and solutions to reduce gun violence.  PassinArt and community partners will host community dialogues in March.  This exhibit is free and open to the public. Due to strong images, not recommended for young children 12 and under.

PassinArt: A Theatre Company is an African American producing theatre company whose mission is to entertain, educate, and inspire artists and audiences while highlighting critical issues facing our community; and to celebrate our culture and history.

The Goals of the Unconscious Bias Symposium 2017 are to raise awareness of unconscious gender bias and its impact on the arts and culture, to stimulate transformation, and to facilitate an action plan for achieving gender equity in the arts. The symposium will bring together local and national artists, social justice activists, patrons of the arts, arts leaders and decision makers, educators, and students to co-create a collective movement for change. Through dialogue, presentations and performance, we will explore, question, challenge, and celebrate new pathways that give genders voice, visibility and empowerment — promoting equity for women in theatre and the performing arts across the life span.
