Clackamas County Commissioner Tootie Smith faces a recall campaign from her constituents. Smith notably boasted that she would flout COVID guidelines at her Thanksgiving celebration last November. More recently, Smith has come to the defense of fellow Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Schull, who was censured by the legislative body for racist and islamophobic comments he made on Facebook. Additionally, Smith has advocated significantly limiting citizen comment from commission meetings.

Taken together, these recent actions prompted Ana Tijerina Esquino to look further into Smith's history and to become the chief petitioner on the campaign to Recall Tootie Smith. She spoke with KBOO's Ethan Sandweiss about the evolution of the movement, the severity of Smith's actions, and the surprising ways it has joined her community together.
