KBOO has mirrored its FM broadcast signal for years on its website. A recent upgrade (late 2008) permits the user a choice between higher and lower quality bit rates, depending on the bandwidth of their internet connection. But we constantly have more volunteers seeking air time than we have available air time. One simple answer, of which we’ve long been aware, is to create a second internet stream, completely different in content from our FM signal.

Compared to our other capital projects this year, this one is truly simple; we need a new computer, a specific type of audio card for it, and then some automation software to keep that stream operating. The software is called Simian and is the choice of thousands of radio stations around the world, from major international broadcasters, to Internet stations and HD radio channels. The audio card is an Orban Optimod PC-1100, specifically designed for both live streaming and on-demand programming. A new computer will be built from scratch by KBOO engineering staff and volunteers.

Realizing this long-term goal will rapidly result in more KBOO volunteers producing more audio for distribution to more listeners, instead of having to wait for a substitution opening in our regular FM schedule.
