Super Bowl Ad Offends Recovering Addicts
The annual Super Bowl broadcast is when advertisers bring out their newest ads, at least since 1984, when Apple introduced itself to the world with an ad based on Orwell’s novel 1984.
Advertisers promote ideas as well as products, for example, in 2002 the federal Office of National Drug Control Policy shocked and offended many viewers when they paid for Super Bowl ads accusing pot smokers of supporting terrorists.
This year, one of the most shocking and controversial Super Bowl ads only aired in one market.
For the second year in a row, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, which is based in Saint Louis, Missouri, ran an ad for heroin that aired only in the Saint Louis area.
Thanks to social media however, the ad, and reactions against it from people in recovery, have gone viral.
To learn more, KBOO reporter Doug McVay spoke with Kathie Kane-Willis from the Illinois Consortium on Drug Policy.
