Free Speech, Peacemakers and the Supreme Court.

Hosts Celeste Carey and Cecil Prescod speak with Stephen Vladeck, Professor at Washington College of Law, American University about "Free Speech, Peacemakers and the Supreme Court."

On Tuesday, Feb. 23, the Supreme Court heard a one hour oral argument for Holder v. Humanitarian Law Project (HLP) to determine whether several key terms in the definition of prohibited material support of terrorism violate the First and Fifth amendments. The case marks the first ever challenge to the Patriot Act at the Supreme Court level and addresses the overbroad scope of the prohibition on "material support" to listed terrorist organizations, which effectively criminalizes peacebuilding programs of U.S. organizations in conflict zones around the world.

The US incarcerates more people than any country in the world - and 70% are people of color. Do we need better mental health care inside prisons -- or do prisons themselves cause trauma and madness?
Psychiatrist and civil lawsuit expert witness Dr.Terry Kupers, author of Prison Madness: The Mental Health Crisis Behind Bars and What We Must Do About It, discusses overcrowding, racism, sensory deprivation, isolation, and sexual abuse in the disgraceful US prison system.

A Different Nature Presents: Wire Music

On this week's A Different Nature, we present Wire Music, the otherwise unheard symphony of powerlines, telephone lines and high tension lines, and the interactions with wind, sunlight or human hands.

We'll hear the works of Australian composer Alan Lamb and his multi-volume works dealing with recording miles and miles of telephone wires in the Outback. We'll hear the haunting sounds of an abandoned WWII radar installation, courtesy of English artist Richard Harrison's album Drone Hill 225 and we'll also hear the architectural/acoustic contructs of artists O & A.

10:00pm - 11:00pm
Hosted by: seanongley
Arrington De Dionyso and Professor Gall

This week I'll be taking you back in time, all the way to February 19th, 2010 at the Artistery, an all-ages house basement and gallery venue here in Portland. The performance was in support of Arrington De Dionyso's new album release Malaiktat Dan Singa out on K Records.  Most folks interested in indie music have heard, or seen Old Time Relijun. Most folks interested in avant-garde and free jazz have witnessed Arrington perform solo. Now, if you are a fan of both -- as only a few are -- you will definitely dig a live performance of Malaiktat Dan Singa. Full of the brash punkish psychedelic energy of Old Time Relijun --but this is Arrington's band! -- he will sing as he desires, solo on the bass clarinet, and go as far in to a trance as he can.
