As pressure increases to turn the Pacific Northwest into an export hub for fossil fuels, many communities are fighting back. Recently the Portland city council voted unanimously to write a new ordinance that will ban construction of new storage and transport facilities for exporting fossil fuels. Meanwhile in Vancouver, Washington the city council is opposing plans to build the largest oil export terminal in the country.
On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Patrick O'Herron with Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility about the struggle to keep the Northwest from becoming a sacrifice zone for the fossil fuel industry.
Patrick O'Herron is the board president of Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility where he focuses on the health impacts of climate change. He is also a practicing general surgeon. He lives with his family in North Portland.
