Karen James with Nova Sweet and Melissa Vitellaro who recently released from Coffee Creek Correctional Facility. While in prison both women participated in the Family Preservation Project, a holistic, evidence-based program that helped incarcerated women reunite with their children, learn parenting skills and reconcile with their families. At the end of 2014, Oregon Department of Corrections canceled the program and Nova and Melissa, along with others, are working toward legislation that will insure that Oregon prioritizes the needs of children with incarcerated moms.
