Voices from the Edge: What's behind Oregon's domestic violence murders-suicides?

program date:
Thu, 12/10/2009

Fourteen Oregonians died last month in five murder-suicides and one attempted murder suicide. Why this sudden outbreak now of men using guns to murder their spouses, ex-spouses and themselves when domestic violence homicides in Oregon have been on the decline? In 1997, 22 domestic violence homicides took place in Multnomah County alone. In recent years, the state average has been eight murder-suicides a year. Is it the economic climate, a lack of social services, or deep-rooted cultural issues?

This week on Voices from the Edge, Jo Ann and Dave talk with Jennifer Warren, LCSW, a counselor with Portland's Men's Resource Center/Women's Counseling Center since 1998. She specializes in domestic violence intervention and recovery, and has worked extensively with men and women arrested for domestic violence. Join us in this discussion about what's behind domestic violence murder-suicides, how the problem is being addressed and what needs to be done to stop the violence.

A group of climate activists in Copenhagen are on the 33rd day of a hunger strike for climate justice.

They are demanding a binding agreement to fund climate adaptation and mitigation activities in developing nations with at least one hundred ninety five billion dollars per year. They also demand an end to overconsumption, deforestation and the use of fossil fuels.

Yesterday two Portland activists joined the fast in solidarity, sitting in Pioneer Courthouse Square and calling for climate justice locally and globally. KBOO’s Jenka Soderberg spoke with one of the Copenhagen hunger strikers, Anna Keenan from Australia.

the end of the show as we know it...

yes, december is the last month of the weekly show we have been doing for approximately 2 1/2 to three years...  all things must come to an end in order for new life to happen; and i have decided to continue doing 'guess who's coming to radio??!!' in another incarnation.

the focus will be the same- dealing with issues regarding people of african descent (better known as black people) in this country.  we will still be dealing with positive and pro-active solutions to the issues we face in our communities.  the difference will be that we will be dealing more in-depth with cultural and public affairs issues.  there will be more in-depth discussions about books and film, alongside the news.  we will take the care to cover things we may not have been able to cover in the weekly incarnation of the program.

Use the Give!Guide to support KBOO this month

The Give!Guide has been active for a few weeks now, and while we've been raising some money, we're looking to reach $20,000 by the end of the month.  With your help, possibly further encouraged by some incentives, we can definitely get there.

If you haven't ever contributed money to KBOO, this is a great time and way to do so, especially if you are under 36 years old.  One major goal of the Guide, aside from raising money for selected non-profits, is to encourage younger people to become familiar with the age-old practice of charitable giving.  Plus, the group raising the most money, and the most separate donations, from people under 36 will receive extra money in the form of a prize.  A little friendly competition never hurt, and your gift right now could help move us up in the rankings.

And as a special enticement for December, if you contribute $100.+ to KBOO through the Give!Guide you will receive a copy of the 2010 Portland Chinook Book, worth thousands of dollars in coupons to local businesses.

Dhoruba bin Wahad and Naji Mujahid: Denied entry into Palestine

program date:
Thu, 11/26/2009

5:00 - 6:00 pm Thurs. Nov. 26th

KBOO interviews Dhoruba bin Wahad, who is speaking from a hotel in Jordan after being detained and then denied entry into Palestine by Israeli authorities.  bin Wahad is a former political prisoner in the US who was charged in 1971 with the murder of two police officers, but was vindicated nineteen years later when a judge ruled that the FBI had fabricated evidence in order to frame bin Wahad of a crime he didn't commit.

As an African-American, on his way to a conference on political prisoners convened by the Palestinian Authority in the city of Jericho, bin Wahad feels that he was racially profiled, along with his travelling companion Naji Mujahid - the only two African Americans on a busload of white tourists.
