Retta Cowboys and Indians was the show title for Monday, August 11, 2008. My guest on the show was Tony Baldwin. Born in London in 1949, Ton Baldwin’s first music teacher was a pupil of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) the Afro-British composer. This experience provided the initial spark for a lifelong interest in American dance music during its heyday between the 1920s and 19940s. Tony was base in Sydney, Australia for many years, where he combined playing piano in Tom Baker’s Swing Street Orchestra with a day-job in radio and record production. Resident in France now for over ten years, Tony performs regularly in European festivals ( Ascona, Cheltenham, Frankfurt, Breda, Montpellier, North Sea, etc.) while maintaining a presence in the art of sound restoration for specialist record labels. As a musician, Tony’s principal influences are Fates Waller, James P. Johnson, Teddy Weatherford, Teddy Wilson, Earl Hines and Mary-Lou Williams, and their work continues to inform his playing.
