SHORTS AND SWEETS: an evening of 1930s jazz film shorts and live swing tunes
On Saturday, May 19, film archivist Dennis Nyback and local band The Stolen Sweets will team up to bring Portland a rare opportunity to experience 35mm vintage films shorts and 1930s swing tunes all in one night.
The event will take place at McMenamins’ Mission Theater at 1624 NW Glisan. Mr. Nyback will show his film shorts from 9:00 PM – 9:45 PM and The Stolen Sweets will go on around 10 PM. The cover charge for this event is $10.
For this collaboration, Nyback will show a 45-minute program of 35mm film shorts showcasing female singers from the early days of jazz and swing, including Sweets favorites, The Boswell Sisters. Nyback specializes in searching through his thousands of film archives – from early jazz films to news reels to vintage television shows – to create thematic programs such as this.
The Stolen Sweets have played at venues all over Portland including the Aladdin Theater, Mississippi Studios, The Crystal Ballroom and Jimmy Mak’s, just to name a few. In February of 2006, The Sweets were featured on OPB’s Oregon Art Beat, which was re-broadcast as part of their Viewer Favorites. In the fall of that same year, they were asked to perform live on OPB’s pledge drive, where their CD was given as a pledge gift. The band will make their third appearance on KMHD’s Home Grown Live on May 12.
