Capital Social Relations and "economic man", South African politics, anarchist organizing

Joe Clement hosts this episode and we hear:

  • Bill Resnick talks with Peter Bratsis about how capitalist social relations have given rise to "economic man" and speciously individualistic conceptions of self-interest. They debate the possibility of and challenges for a cultural revolution in the direction of a more collaborative socialist ethos. Bratsis is author of "Everyday Life and the State" and teaches political science at Cit University of New York.
  • Jan Haaken interviews Alan Wieder about current politics in South Africa as he returns from a month of talks on his new book Ruth First and Joe Slovo in the War Against Apartheid.
  • Joe Clement interviews Jeff Shantz about "Especifismo", a widely successful approach to anarchist organizing in South America that stresses community and labor organizing, mass appeal, and social insertion, and supporting spontaneous democratic activity. They talk about how this tendency grew out of anarchist experiences of defeat during the Russian Revolution and how the idea of anarchist organizing has evolved since. This talk looks forward to the "Building a Revolutionary Anarchism" event at the Red and Black Cafe on August 13th. Shantz is an anarchist scholar, a rank-and-file union activist in the IWW, and teaches courses on critical theory, elite deviance, community advocacy and human rights at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
