Today vs. The New Deal Era
We are seeing a lot of folks wanting a return to the New Deal. The thing is: FDR got the New Deal in a context where people were asking for things high and asset taxation that never got into the New Deal. Few folks even on the left are really considering anything like that today. Is it really possible to get any concessions unless items like direct taxation of assets are on the bargaining table?
When I called, I was asked if I thought asset taxation is a real possibility? I can assure you that it will not happen unless folks start to ask for it. I would also suggest that until it is asked for, there will not be a broad concensnsus among the american public. I also really doubt there is any other way to balance the budget without crashing the economy.
