What would you do if your son insisted on wearing a dress to school? What if your baby girl insisted she was a boy? It seems transgender children are coming out earlier and earlier, but the situation raises endless questions: is their cross-gender identification is just a phase? How can parents support gender identity? How young is “too young” to transition from one gender to another? At what point should parents seek medical intervention? What are the ramifications of suppressing or countering the biological changes inherent in puberty? Should surgery even be considered when dealing with children? Where can trans-identified youth go to get medical assistance?
KBOO’s queer youth show, The Other Team will address these controversial issues in a two-part special beginning Tuesday August 4th 6 to 7 pm. Tune in to hear first-hand narratives from trans youth and their parents; and advice from professionals confronting the unique challenges that arise when children break out of their pink or blue boxes.
August 4th’s confirmed guests:
Stephanie Brill, author of the groundbreaking handbook, The Transgender Child.
Jenn Burleton, founder of Portland’s TransActive, an organization that advocates on behalf of trans youth.
The second half of the special-report will air September 1st 6-7pm.
