Join the Oregon Sierra Club's Columbia Group for a discussion about the ways in which free trade policies adversely affect the environment.  The discussion will be led by Arthur Stamoulis of the Oregon Fair Trade Campaign, a statewide coalition of more than 30 environmental, labor and human rights organizations initially formed by the Oregon Chapter of the Sierra Club and the Oregon AFL-CIO.  Topics covered include:

 

• How the World Trade Organization (WTO) has forced the rollback of parts of the Endangered Species Act, Clean Air Act and other landmark environmental laws
• How existing trade pacts are contributing to "rip and ship" resource extraction in some of the world's most biodiverse forests
• How the WTO handcuffs governments' ability to address climate change, forcing future policies to conform to restrictive commercial agreements
• How trade policies could be changed to help protect the environment, and ways Sierra Club members can get involved
