TRADE AND THE ENVIRONMENT
A discussion with Arthur Stamoulis of the Oregon Fair Trade Campaign
Thursday, November 19
Doors open at 6:30 pm; event starts promptly at 7:00 pm
Sierra Club Office
1821 SE Ankeny * Portland, OR
Join the Oregon Sierra Club's Columbia Group for a discussion about the ways in which free trade policies adversely affect the environment. The discussion will be led by Arthur Stamoulis of the Oregon Fair Trade Campaign, a statewide coalition of more than 30 environmental, labor and human rights organizations initially formed by the Oregon Chapter of the Sierra Club and the Oregon AFL-CIO. Topics covered include:
- How the World Trade Organization (WTO) has forced the rollback of parts of the Endangered Species Act, Clean Air Act and other landmark environmental laws
- How existing trade pacts are contributing to "rip and ship" resource extraction in some of the world's most biodiverse forests
- How the WTO handcuffs governments' ability to address climate change, forcing future policies to conform to restrictive commercial agreements
- How trade policies could be changed to help protect the environment, and ways Sierra Club members can get involved
This event comes just weeks before Portland's Saturday, December 5th march and rally against the WTO, sponsored by the Club and over 60 other organizations across the state. Arthur's presentation is free and open to the public. For more information, email info@december5.org or call (503) 736-9777.
