Oregon is Facing a Transgender Lawsuit

In the wake of Portland’s historic vote that removed healthcare restrictions for the city’s transgender employees, the State of Oregon is now facing a lawsuit on similar grounds.

State employee Alec Esquivel is accusing his employer of denying him medically necessary healthcare based on his gender identity.  Esquivel, who transitioned from female to male over ten years ago, says the state recently denied him coverage of a Hysterectomy because of a transgender specific exclusion in the state’s health plan.

The procedure was recommended by his doctor because of Esquivel’s heightened cancer risk.  For more on this story, KBOO’s AJ Dingman spoke with Esquivel’s attorney Dru Levasseur.
