Four years ago, a handful of Montavilla neighborhood residents gathered and came up with the idea to open a "year-round place where Montavilla residents could access fresh, local, sustainable food and groceries.

The mission of the Montavilla Food Coop is "to enhance the quality of life for both residents and visitors by providing access to affordable, healthy food in an environment shaped by the community's values."

Granito is an expression of the indigenous people of Guatemala...none of us can do it alone, each must put in their granito, their tiny grain of sand.  Direct descendants of the ancient Maya, the indigenous of Guatemala make up 40% of the population.  With the help of the U.S. government, as many of 200,000 of them and their supporters, the future leaders of Guatemala, were masacred in the early 1980s. Documentary filmaker Pamela Yates witnessed the genocide and found she had her own granito, evidence to help nail a dictator.

Learn about PlayWrite, a local non-profit founded 10 years ago which works with youth ‘at the edge’ to create original plays, powerful vehicles through which the voices of young people are heard. We welcome in the studio Lyndsay Hogland, program director, Alyson Osborne, coach/actor  and Ryder Lynn and Francesca, 2 young women who recently participated in a play writing workshop.

"PlayWrite coaches are drawn from the Oregon theater community, and are trained to work one-on-one with each young person. Within the intense structured activities of PlayWrite workshops, these young writers create original art. In the process, they learn to trust, manage, and heal their own emotional experiences; to work collaboratively; and to contribute positively to their communities.

The time for immigration reform is now. Join a conversation on why and how with two leading women activists:

Pramila Jayapal, the founder and Director of OneAmerica, the largest immigrant advocacy organization in WA State. Pramila, an immigrant from India, has spent the last two decades working for social justice internationally and in the US. She participated in a march and action for immigration reform in Seattle this Thursday.

Tania Unzueta is the Co-founder of the Chicago-based Immigrant Youth Justice League and an organizer for the US Social Forum. She was one of five young people who temporarily sat in at Senator John McCain’s office in Arizona earlier this week in an attempt to force action on the “Dream Act.” The act would provide an avenue for students who have spent most of their lives in the US to gain legal status. Tania’s came with her parents from Mexico when she was 10 years old.

Midwifery and the Politics of Birth

Hosts Nicole Vulcan and Ashley Thirstrup examine the issue of birth rights, the home birth issue, and efforts nationwide to see that families have a choice when it comes to how they  bring their children into this world.  They talk with two advocates working for childbirth choices in South Dakota - a state which feminists have scored an F in the area of reproductive freedoms.

Local midwives, Laura Erickson and Kori Pienovi, of Alma Midwifery Center discuss the Midwives' Model of Care and the challenges that model faces from the more mainstream hospital birth model.  They explain their experiences assisting women through home births, water births and throughout their prenatal care.  KBOO listeners call in with their questions, thoughts and concerns.
