Distributing Your Show on the Web
Here we have instructions for doing Phone interviews in all our Production Rooms.
Remember, it's confusing, so PLEASE ask questions. If there's a problem that you can't solve, write it in the Program Problem Log that is kept in the Air Room. The DJ will help you find it.
Doing a phone interview in the DES
Before you call the person…
-- Open up Adobe Audition and start a New File. SAVE IT IN YOUR FOLDER
now, and you won’t lose it later. Smart!
-Pot the Mic up, as well as the Main Mix. Set a good level for your voice.
On the Headphone/Monitor pot, set a good level for the headphones.
Also, make sure the Computer Speakers are Turned OFF (feedback…).
-- Have your questions ready, and laid out so you don’t have to shuffle
around a lot in the interview.
Call Your Interview-ee!
--Dial a 9, and then the number on the Beige phone. Line 4 is an office
number, and you won’t accidentally end up on the air. Lines 1-3 have
better sound quality. Choose how you will. When the phone is answered, say Howdy,
emind the person you are recording them, and ask them to hold on a
second while you hook them through the system. Hit the RED hold button,
and hang up the phone.
--To the Right of the Computer, and to the Left of the phone, we have a
Telos Box, hit the Button that corresponds to What Line You chose on the
Beige phone. Hit the button Twice, so the light above the number is Solid
(not blinking). Then, pot up the Phone on the mixer board.
Hit RECORD on the Adobe Audition, and put your headphones ON.
The interviewee can only hear you through the mic. Begin by asking them a
question that has nothing to do with the subject of your interview, in order
to set the recording level of their voice, and to help relax them a bit. Then,
plunge on into your questions.
--At the end, remember to ask them if they have anything to say that you
didn’t ask them, and get contact information so we can send them a copy of
the show once it’s done.
-Hang up the phone, pot down the phone and your mic. Then, on the Telos
board on the left, hit the number of the phone line you were on so it’s
blinking, and then hit DROP. That’s what actually hangs up the phone line.
Now, most importantly, SAVE YOUR FILE.
--Get out of the DES for at least 5 minutes before you start editing.
It gets hot in there, and sometimes we all forget that we need fresh air.
--Edit away!
Doing a phone interview in Production 1
Before you call the person…
-- Open up Adobe Audition and start a New File. SAVE IT IN YOUR FOLDER
now, and you won’t lose it later. Smart!
-Pot the Announcer Mic up, and set a good level for your voice.
On the Headphone/autocue knob on the right side of the mixing board,
set a good level for the headphones. Also, make sure the Room Speakers
are Down all the way (the Monitor Control Room knob) to avoid feedback.
When the phone is answered,
say Howdy, remind the person you are recording them, and ask them to
hold on a second while you hook them through the system. Hit the RED hold
button, and hang up the phone.
--The Telos Box is above the mixing board, and will be in front of
you if you’re looking into the air room. Press the Button that corresponds
to What Phone Line You chose on the phone. There are 2 rows of buttons,
Tel 1 and Tel 2. this means you can interview two different people at once
from 2 different locations. Cool! So, use Tel 1 if you are only interviewing
one person. Hit the button Twice, so the light above the number is Solid
(not blinking). Then, pot up the TEL 1 pot on the mixer board. Hit RECORD
on the Adobe Audition, and put your headphones ON. The interviewee can
only hear you through the mic. Begin by asking them a question that has
nothing to do with the subject of your interview, in order to set the
recording level of their voice, and to help relax them a bit. Then, plunge
on into your questions.
--At the end, remember to ask them if they have anything to say that you
didn’t ask them, and get contact information so we can send them a copy of
the show once it’s done.
-Hang up the phone, pot down the phone and your mic. Then, on the
Telos board , press the number of the phone line you were on one time,
so it’s blinking, and then hit DROP. That’s what actually hangs up the phone
line. Now, most importantly, SAVE YOUR FILE.
--Take a Break, and then come back and edit away!
Doing a Phone Interview in
Production Room 2
PREPARING FOR THE
INTERVIEW:
--All buttons for
the headphones, the meters and the monitor speakers should be in PROGRAM (The
red one).
--Turn down the knob
for monitor speakers all the way (to avoid that awful feedback that we hate)
and make sure the headphone knob is set to about 10 o’clock (so you’ll be able
to hear yourself).
--Stereo selectors
on the Pots should be in Stereo.
--Check that Pot 5
(The Computer) is turned down all the way (to avoid feedback).
--Make sure the
Microphone Patch Bay is connected to This Room, and the Regular Patch Bay has
nothing connected to it.
Set up The Computer:
--Log on to the
computer. The password is “HaveFun!”
--Double Click on
Cool Edit Pro. This will open the program.
--Go to the FILE
menu, and open a new file.
--Go to the file
menu, and highlight “Save As”
--Save the file IN
YOUR FOLDER with an appropriate name.
Set up your
Microphone: (these instructions are for the mic on Pot 2):
--Push the MIC 2
Button in
--Push the PGM (red)
and the AUD (blue) buttons in.
--Turn the knob to
about 2 o’clock
--Put your
headphones on
--Switch the Toggle
up (this turns your mic on)
--Set your headphone
level, and confirm you can hear yourself.
--Hit the “Record”
button on the computer, and set an appropriate recording level for your voice.
--Stop the recording and erase what you’ve tested once you’re done.
--Turn the toggle
off and take off the headphones. Keep the knob level set.
Set up the Phone
Imput on Pot 6:
--Push the PHONE
button in
--Push PGM (red) in.
The AUD (blue) button MUST BE OUT (nasty feedback happens when it’s left in. We
hate that.)
--Turn the knob to
about 4 o’clock.
DOING THE
INTERVIEW:
--Use one of the
office lines on the Beige Phone. These are lines 4 and 5 (if you use one of the
first three lines, which, if you look closely, are labeled Studio, you could
accidentally end up on the air. This sucks.). Call your interviewee, and dial 9
+ area code + phone number (press hard on the buttons, the #7 is especially
sticky).
--Introduce yourself
and tell them why you’re calling. (This shouldn’t be the very first time they
hear from you, so it should be easy to remind them what you are going to
interview them about.) Ask them if it’s okay to record the conversation. This
might seem redundant, but is actually legal necessity. Once they agree, tell
them you’re putting them on hold, and will be back to them in a minute or so.
Push the red button on the Beige Phone, and hang up.
--The Telemix box is
to the right of the Beige phone. The corresponding phone line should be slow
blinking. Hit the button and it should begin “fast blinking”. This means the
phone call is patched through the board.
--Hit the “Record”
button on the computer.
--Turn up Pot 6.
Your interviewee should be there.
--Put your
headphones on, and turn on your mic, on Pot 2. Both your levels should be
coming up on the computer.
--Say hello to your
interviewee, say you need to set the recording levels before you begin, and ask
a question that doesn’t relate to your interview at all. This will give you a
chance to set good levels without missing out on important information.
--Once the levels
are set, tell them you are ready to begin the interview, and ask them to state
their NAME, TITLE, and ORGANIZATION. This will help you with pronunciation and
organization.
--Interview away!
Always monitor the levels, and if you have to cough or find yourself making
“agreeing noises” you can always toggle off your mic. They won’t be able to
hear you, or your papers rustling, or any of that.
--When you’re
finished with the phone call, turn your mic off, hit the “Off” button on the
Telemix (this hangs up on the phone caller), and stop the recording on the
computer. SAVE your completed interview now!
CONGRATULATIONS! YOU’RE FINISHED!

-Pot the Mic up, as well as the Main Mix. Set a good level for your voice. On the Headphone/Monitor pot, set a good level for the headphones. Also, make sure the Room Speakers are Down all the way (the big knob on the box in the corner) and the Computer Speakers are Turned OFF (feedback…).
-- Have your questions ready, and laid out so you don’t have to shuffle around a lot in the interview.
Call Your Interview-ee!
--Dial a 9, and then the number on the Black phone. Line 4 is an office number, and you won’t accidentally end up on the air. Lines 1-3 have better sound quality. Choose how you will. When the phone is answered, say Howdy, remind the person you are recording them, and ask them to hold on a second while you hook them through the system. You must first attend a volunteer orientation and then contact Ani Haines to sign up for the following trainings. Our next volunteer orientation will be held Saturday, September 18th, noon - 2 PM. Please see our volunteer page for more about volunteering, and attending the orientation.
While trainings are free to active volunteers at KBOO, we do require that you volunteer for eight-hours following each training you sign up for.
During September, we have special trainings that are related to the Fall MembershipDrive, which runs on-air from October 1st through the 16th. If you are interested in Pitching (that is being on mic, and telling listeners why it's important to become members of KBOO), you must attend a pitching workshop (or have attended in the last year).
How to Effectively Raise Money On-Air (AKA the Pitching Workshop):
We need many, many volunteers to answer the Membership Drive Phones. If you are new to the Membership Drive, it would be a great idea to attend a Phone Answering Workshop:
We have regular trainings monthly to help build skills in audio production and news writing & reporting.
