Un-Herd

Spoken or musical short performance. This is a show that reaches out to the unknown of Portland performers, reaches in between the scenes for the most unique of performer, hopefully. Only you can help to make that happen.

Please submit your recordings or text for consideration on this program, please send it or drop it off at 20 SE 8th Ave Portland, OR 97214.

Scott Stobbe's Surrealism on the Un|Herd Archives

Welcome to episode #19 of the Un | Herd Archives, where unusual sound is the usual. This episode is no exception, featuring 2 compositions by Scott Stobbe, and it comes along as a coincidence of programs. Actually, this show was recorded live on a special program for Surrealism and Dada performance that I co-produce, entitled, Desolo Luna Vox Theatrum. Scott Stobbe is a composer of new music, and an innovator of new methods of composition at Portland State University. He will introduce the works after I am through introducing him. The music has been slightly compressed but remains highly dynamic. Listening discretion is advised. Now enjoy.

Un|Herd Archives

Episode #15

February 22nd, 2010

Chrome Wings performs from their new release on Sohitek Records and talks about the changes that have occurred in over two years of developing the sound of their day: a more electronic and surreal experience than previous incarnations and rotating doors. The band has always taken its influence from Job Jurow, the chief organizer but not necessarily front man. It should be interesting to rediscover this band in another couple of years.

Un|Herd Archives

Episode #16

March 22nd, 2010

Moodring graced the studio with their upbeat noise and indie style funk. I wrote my own take on the band, and while browsing their label's website, I read a review almost identical to mine, confirming my perspective.

"This a truly bizzare album. It’s dark yet not too heavy, it’s simple but then again has complex arrangements, it’s solid but each track is a master’s work. The many conflicts in Moodring’s albums, like many Rollerball albums, is what makes this band so special & this album to a delightful piece of work."

Episode #18

April 5, 2010

Miazma is a ball of contradictions in many ways. They seem to be influenced by demons and angels at once. Its not unusual for an artist to have that in them, but its alluring and they wear it well with groovin' heavy beats, electric guitar and synthesizers. Have a listen.

Episode #17

April 5, 2010

Abusive/Consumer, formerly Abusive Delay, possibly to be named simply Consumer, is a dynamic sonic artist and noise performer with a flavor for digital synthesis, sampling, rhythm and anti-blues. Formerly a free jazz drummer, even his drones become rhythmic. The fellow is enrolled at Evergreen College for the Fall, studying Sound Design. His extensive explorations of sound will surely reach new heights and I'm sure to track the progress as it goes. You would be advised to start here if you haven't already.

Thank you for tuning in to Un-Herd Archive series episode 14. This show dates to Nov 23 2009. This program was originally shared with episode 13 featured performance Deeds. Now its time for something totally different, the artist we call Soup Purse. Todd Dickerson, a performer and scholar of noise, a seer of visions, he is the man behind Soup Purse. He is nothing less than a fixture of the Portland noise scene and a respected fellow for that matter. His performance is more than sound, its divination. He borrows from the early surrealists in terms of method but not necessarily form. He also incorporates some spoken theatrical performance in to each show, but not in this program, oddly, perhaps he prefers an audience to feed from. So now, please have your self a big helping of Soup Purse.

2 duos, 2 debuts, 1 year in the Un|Herd Archives

Alas we have arrived at Un | Herd Archive Episode number 13. This one includes two performances, the main show being that of an improvisational duet entitled, Deeds. And they are Brian Mumford on electric guitar and Un | Herd veteran, John Niekrasz on drums. The second portion of the show will be a 6 minute clip from one of my earliest programs featuring John again on drums and Seth Brown on Fender Rhodes piano, performing as Why I Must Be Careful. The prior goes back to November 23, 2009, and the latter goes back to November 24, 2008. I believe they were both debut performances; the prior was totally new and improvised; the latter was freshly composed. So please enjoy Deeds and Why I Must Be Careful.

Infiltration Meditation

Infiltration Lab is the effort of one, Jason Plumb. You can see the pool of talent he offers the world at noisybox.net, and he generously offers his rather cutting edge, real deal noise music -- which should be on labels like Soileil Moon or Tzadik -- for free download at www.infiltrationlab.com. He took on the hour alone with his sampler and brilliant little Linux computer in a plastic tool box running PD (Pure Data open source audio software). This hour long program was special to me, meditative and relaxing.

Enjoy.

Avante-Garde Trifecta: Sustentacula, Jean-Paul Jenkins, Golden Retriever

Welcome to Un|Herd Archive episode #7.

I will be combining two programs and three performances: Sustentacula, Jean-Paul Jenkins, and False Entries. Sustentacula is David Rafn – designer, improviser, singer-songwriter -- performing acoustic guitar and prepared noisy things, from his new album on Rasbliutto Recordings. Jean-Paul Jenkins is he-who-plays-in-the-world, as an improviser or abstract composer, also on Rasbliutto Recordings, this time playing with guttural, fuzzed out bluesy electric guitar. The laterally mentioned performances were broadcast live, March 23rd 2009.

For the 3rd part of this show, we have Golden Retriever, which was a debut performance between Matt Carlson and Jonathan Sieloff, and was recorded March 2nd, 2009. Carlson and Sieloff are each academically learned musicians who took to the Portland scene of improvisers and avante-garde composers. Golden Retriever demonstrates modal improvisation using electrified bass clarinet (Sieloff) and synthesizer keyboards (Carlson).

This program was produced and engineered by Sean Ongley.

Un-Herd, September 26th, 2am-5:30am.

This morning's show consisted of 3 genre blocks. From 2-3am there was jazz, 3-4am was rock, and 4-5am was 20th/21st Century music. Refer to the playlist for details. And as usual, 5-5:30am is the world music block focusing on current events related nations; due to recent trading of fire with Pakistan and the on-going conflicts with Iraq, music was played from these nations.

Keep it cool
