Air date:
Tue, 07/29/2014 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Abe and Joe examine the sorry state of our Constitutional order, particularly the impeachment clause
There's a Democrat in the White House. If you're a Republican, this is a fundamentally unacceptable condition. Clearly, he should be impeached. The latest round of GOP anti-Obama hysteria is predictably silly, but it's helpful in illuminating just how broken our Constitutional system really is.

What should the government be able to keep secret? Were the WikiLeaks a good thing?

program date:
Tue, 12/21/2010

What should the government be able to keep secret? Were the WikiLeaks a good thing?

The release of secret U.S. State Department diplomatic cables by WikiLeaks has prompted a draconian response, ranging from calls for founder Julian Assange's assassination to repeated attempts to shut down WikiLeaks and its satellite Web sites. Attacks from leading American political and media figures -- not to mention Assange's arrest -- suggest that it's a far graver sin to expose secrets than to govern under their aegis.

Is piercing the veil of government secrecy a good thing? Is WikiLeaks endangering national security, or providing a public service? Is an independent Web-based entity fulfilling the role that the American press has largely abdicated? With Joe on vacation, Abe looks at the fallout.

The Death of the New Deal - or - Obama's Tax Cut "Compromise"

program date:
Tue, 12/14/2010

Hosted by Abe Proctor and Joe Uris.

Join Abe and Joe as we mourn the death of the New Deal. President Obama's  tax cut "compromise" spells out, in painful detail, the final death of the idea of liberalism as a governing philosophy. Obama was elected at the head of a populist wave and enjoyed strong majorities in both houses of Congress -- but at every turn, the prerogatives of the ruling class remained intact. The Bush tax cuts remain in place. Unemployment remains high. Obama and the Democrats kiss the ring of their corporate masters. Rest in peace, American Century. We hardly knew ye

Adele M. Stan and Dangerous Brew: Exposing the Tea Party's Agenda to Take Over America

Categories:
program date:
Tue, 11/30/2010

Today, Host Joe Uris talks with Adele Stan, co-editor for the new book from AlterNet, Dangerous Brew: Exposing The Tea Party's Agenda to Take Over America.

This book features in-depth AlterNet coverage and investigative reporting, as well as the voices of more than a dozen of the smartest observers of right-wing politics in America. It explores the complex story of the Tea Party movement, from its emergence as an apparent grass-roots, anti-tax uprising, to its current formation as a coalition organized by Fox News, powerful corporate interests, and the old men of the New Right to foment an upheaval in the Republican Party and the nation at large.

Abe tackles the Pope's reversal on condom use and the state of modern sexual politics

program date:
Tue, 11/23/2010

With Joe away, Abe tackles the Pope's reversal on condom use and the state of modern sexual politics

In a stunning reversal of decades of dogma, Pope Benedict has declared that condoms can be used to control the transmission of HIV under certain circumstances. Specifically, if you're a male prostitute. Those Catholics who are neither male nor inclined to prostitution are still out of luck.

Still, it's good that the Pope finally admitted that condoms can be of use. The official condemnation of contraception by the Catholic Church (and its Protestant brethren) remains, however, one of the most socially irresponsible positions a major world organization could possibly take. And, also one of the most ignored positions.

Do we live in a Democracy, Plutocracy, Fascist State, or something totally different?

program date:
Tue, 11/16/2010

Hosted by Abe Proctor and Joe Uris

As the populist wave that swept President Obama into office gives way to Business as Usual, Americans are waking up to the realities of life in a Plutocracy. Both Frank Rich in the New York Times and Chris Hedges on Alternet reflect on this point in grand fashion. Rich, in a column titled "Who Will Stand Up to the Superrich?" writes that the "issue is whether the country can afford the systemic damage being done by the ever-growing income inequality between the wealthiest Americans and everyone else, whether poor, middle class or even rich."

Hedges describes the current outbreak of economic dislocation and political alienation as "a recipe for fascism." Is there a way forward for thinking citizens? Abe and Joe discuss the alternatives.

An election post-mortem and the path forward for progressives

program date:
Tue, 11/09/2010

Hosted by Abe Proctor and Joe Uris

The story of the 2010 midterms -- depending on your perspective -- is one of opportunity lost. President Obama and the Democrats were swept into office in 2008 on a wave of populist optimism, with all their stars aligned. The country seemed poised for a neo-Rooseveltian turnover, a new New Deal.

Reality, of course, turned out to be different. Two years later, the GOP has taken control of the House. Abe and Joe look over the wreckage of Election Day, both local and national, and try to plot a path forward for progressives.

It's Election Day! Abe and Joe bring you the lowdown.
