Impeachment, or something

Air date:
Tue, 07/29/2014 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Abe and Joe examine the sorry state of our Constitutional order, particularly the impeachment clause
There's a Democrat in the White House. If you're a Republican, this is a fundamentally unacceptable condition. Clearly, he should be impeached. The latest round of GOP anti-Obama hysteria is predictably silly, but it's helpful in illuminating just how broken our Constitutional system really is.

Gerry Pollet of Heart of America NW joins Abe to discuss the latest on the Hanford nuclear site

program date:
Tue, 07/26/2011

Hosted by Abe Proctor.  Joe Uris is on vacation.

Since its birth during the Manhattan Project, the Hanford Nuclear Reservation has left a toxic legacy in its wake, from displaced populations to groundwater contamination to radiation in the Columbia River. Now, the U.S Department of Energy has proposed a "cleanup plan" that abandons large amounts of plutonium and other toxins at the site, and is even proposing using Hanford as a nationwide toxics disposal site.

Gerry Pollet of Heart of America Northwest joins Abe to discuss the latest on the Hanford situation, as well as how you can push back against the poisoning of our region at two upcoming meetings.

Conservatism: the gnawing fear that someone, somewhere, might be having a good time.

program date:
Tue, 07/19/2011

Hosted by Abe Proctor.  Joe Uris is still on vacation.

In the 2010 elections, the GOP snatched up statehouses and state legislatures across the country. Predictably, an onslaught of regressive legislation has ensued -- againstwomenagainst minorities, against the environment, against voting rights. Even against efficient lightbulbs.

What's up here? What's behind this need to make sure everyone knows his -- or more to the point, her -- place? It's that sad old chorus, the scared white dudes. With Joe on vacation, Abe looks listens to the plaintive distress call of the endangered patriarch.

As the Republic is delivered into the hands of the plutocrats, Abe surveys the wreckage.

program date:
Tue, 07/12/2011

Hosted by Abe Proctor.  Joe Uris is off for the summer.

We truly have passed through the looking glass. With unemployment near 10 percentfor the third straight year, the patricians in Washington haggle over whether corporate jets deserve special tax consideration. In the name of fiscal discipline, after eight years of reckless borrowing and warmongering under G.W. Bush, congressional Republicans have seen fit to hold hostage the creditworthiness of the United States.

Does it matter that teachers, soldiers, police officers, librarians and firefighters won't get paid? Does it matter that, when the U.S. defaults on its debts, interest rates will jump and the world's most reliable investment will dissolve? Does it matter that the first chinks will appear in the armor ofMedicare and Social Security? Does it matter that a cornerstone of world economic confidence will evaporate? Apparently not.

Sometimes, we get one right! Way to go, New York! Gay Marriage is now Legal.

program date:
Tue, 06/28/2011

Hosted by Abe Proctor.  Joe Uris is off for the Summer

Way to go, New York! Sometimes the good guys win. Despite America's many sins down through the years, true equality inches closer all the time.

But that's not to say we should rest on our laurels. For every New York, there's anOklahoma. In fact, since the GOP's electoral tide of 2008, there's been an explosion inanti-woman and anti-immigrant legislation across the land. With Joe on vacation, Abe celebrates a rare win in the culture wars.

Mr. President: Let's look at the 7-decade growth of executive power in the U.S.

program date:
Tue, 06/21/2011

Hosted by Abe Proctor.  Joe Uris is off for the summer.

Mr. President: Let's look at the 7-decade growth of executive power in the U.S.

It's been nearly 70 years since the U.S. Congress has declared war. The current administration has enshrined and deepened the surveillance state first ushered in under the auspices of the Cold War and the War on Drugs, and then imposed under G.W. Bush's War on Terror. Once-inviolable rights to counsel, swift trial, due process, security from search and seizure, and habeas corpus have been rendered insubstantial.

Without doubt, the scope of executive power in the U.S. has expanded drastically. It's time to view this expansion not only in terms of the abuses of the Bush Years, but in terms of the gradual growth of presidential warmaking and surveillance powers since the Second World War. We are not the same republic we once were.

Fear not, citizen, the President has your interests at heart. That's why he's wooing Wall Street.

program date:
Tue, 06/14/2011

Hosted by Abe Proctor.  (Joe Uris is off for the Summer...)

It's been estimated that the winner of the 2012 presidential election will need to spend $1 billion to do it. In 2008, the financial sector, realizing it had been the catalyst for the economic meltdown, realized Barack Obama was a winner and decided to back him. This time around, he's making sure they back him again.

Of course, none of those responsible for the financial meltdown have gone to jail. Now that the president is courting them, will they ever?

Welcome to the Machine. The USA PATRIOT Act has been renewed for another four years.

program date:
Tue, 06/07/2011

Hosted by Abe Proctor and Joe Uris.

The surveillance state ushered in under the reign of Bush the Younger was given a bipartisan imprimatur in late May when the USA PATRIOT Act was renewed for another four years. Warrantless wiretaps? You bet. Illegal searches of personal and business records? That's just how it is these days, because, you know, terrorism.  But not to worry, for You, Too, can Spy on your Neighbor with the new FBI Public - Private Cooperative Intelligence Apparatus, InfraGard.

It appears that any hopes progressives may have had that President Obama would undo the Bush-era security state are unfounded. Whither from here? Abe and Joe survey the damage.

Today's show is the last time we'll hear Joe's voice for the summer.  He's teaching History during his vacation, and will be back in the Fall.  In the mean time, Abe will Go Solo on our Tuesday Morning Talk Radio Show.

What you don't know can't hurt the Oregonian; We'll look at the paper's new online partnership

program date:
Tue, 05/31/2011

Like newspapers everywhere, the Oregonian is struggling to find a place in the new world of digital media. Its new online Oregon News Network pairs it with a set of independent partners to generate locally-based reporting -- including the Cascade Policy Institute, a libertarian think tank. The CPI has championed, among other things, privatizing public education and Social Security, as well as abolishing the minimum wage in favor of a new (and lower) "training wage."

Abe and Joe discuss the relative merits of the Oregonian's new online model, and whether it's a good idea for it to use radical "news" outlets like CPI.

Also...  DO get uspet about Oregon Senate Bill 2700, which will allow Energy Companies to clear-cut our Forests and steal our Farms & Wineries to install Gas Pipelines that will ship Gas to California.  The Trees are in Oregon, but the Gas goes to California...
