Community Grooves

 

The Community Grooves program, produced and hosted by Natalie Butto, is about culture across diverse genres and communities.
 
Features include diverse cultural associations and events - such as Hispanic Heritage, Native American Heritage, Kwanzaa, Oregon Day of Culture, Siren Nation Arts Festival, and India Festival - along with related guests. 
 
The program airs live on 1st Fridays at 11:30am-12noon on KBOO Portland 90.7 FM, and at kboo.fm. After airing, programs are also available as a podcast online.

Celebrating Black History month, Host Natalie Butto previews the Portland Jazz Festival, exploring this year's theme "Bridges and Boundaries, Jewish and African Americans playing Jazz" with Festival Artistic Director Bill Royston.

Also joining the program is Shireen Farrahi talking about the Cascade Festival of African Films.

Community Grooves generally airs on the 1st Friday of the month. Due to special programming last Friday, the show aired live on Tuesday Feb. 8th.

Patricia Martinez - founding Chair of Latino Fund of Oregon; associate faculty at Marylhurst University; former Executive Director for Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement; and an educator with 25 years experience as a teacher, principal, and district administrator.

Steven Bender - University of Oregon Law school Professor; Oregon Commission on Hispanic Affairs appointee; co-president of SALT (Society of American Law Teachers); and author of several books encompassing legal, cultural, and historical issues involving Latino(a)s including just released "Tierra y Libertad: Land, Liberty, and Latino Housing".

Consuelo Saragoza - Senior Advisor of Public Health & Community Initiatives, Multnomah County Health Department; Co-founder of the Oregon Latino Agenda for Action; and Board member of Hacienda CDC and TriMet.

We talked about current outlook, immigration, education, and health, and the upcoming Latino Agenda for Action inaugural Summit.
