Fare thee well Gayle

I just heard the last show of the Celtic Hour, it was yanked from the KBOO programming. Whatever will replace it is not listed in the schedule. Are there not enough listeners around here who care for the Celtic music, culture and views?

I myself have not favored anything Celtic, and I don't have a drop of Celtic blood in me -- yet I did appreciate this radio show. KBOO is now a less diverse station without it. Often people mistakenly called it the Irish Hour, but this show wasn't just for the Irish, it was for the Scottish, Welsh and Gallic. It was for all the Celtic peoples in Oregon, as well as the rest of America (and anywhere else in the world that has access to radio over the web).

It wasn't just jigs and fiddling either. I was occasionally surprised by the range of music by Celtic artists, instrumental and vocal, acoustic and electric, folk as well as rock and jazz, local artists and those from overseas.

And the talk wasn't just rants and politics either. Gayle Jewell would usually cover several subjects over the hour, ranging from local happenings and the community, to the reality of oppression and war that affects all of America, and to some good words about peace, nature and traditions. Her casual style was never dull or monotonous.

Celtic Hour

I was just pulling onto I-5 (from Tualatin) when a friend called and told me to tune into your show. She knew how I love celtic music and was sure I would enjoy listening! I turned the dial just quickly enough to catch the very last note of a song.

Then, from 9:14 til 9:34 - the next twenty minutes! - a voice listed names, addresses, phone numbers, and even e-mail addresses in a monotonous, expressionless litany. From time to time she would rant about politics or promise a song 'up next' ... but from Tualatin all the way into the City of Woodburn she chattered on.

In short, I spent a full third of the celtic hour waiting for something celtic, and the show failed to live up to its name. I wonder, is this how the show is typically structured? Twenty minutes of dribble, followed by a sole song so the host can prepare for her next spotlight?

(Incidentally, I heard you refer to our president as "Mr. Shrub" ... how disappointingly juvenile must your host be, to resort to name-calling? A celtic radio show is not the place to rally political support, but in lowering yourselves to such a level you appear truly, sickeningly juvenile.)

I love celtic culture. It has rhythm, passion, patriotism, and class. Your show has none of this. How sad... You have such opportunity to spread the celtic culture, but you fail to; if I, who am already sold on the product, am turned away by your presentation, how much more so would someone be who has not yet been exposed to celtic music?

In short, I chanced 20 minutes of my day on your show, and it was more than you deserved. In the most literal sense, you are a waste of time.

playlist for 10/8

Hey, I loved the first couple of songs you played on yesterday's show. I missed the rest of the show and I was wondering if you could give me the playlist for the show? Thanks.
